In the Czech Republic, you can change car ownership at any Regional Office’s Vehicle Registry (Registr vozidel). Both the buyer and seller need to be present for the ownership transfer unless the buyer has a power of attorney from the seller. For the power of attorney, the seller’s signature must be officially authorised.
Documents Required for Car Ownership Transfer in the Czech Republic
If you're transferring car ownership in the Czech Republic, here's what you'll need to provide:
Application form for registering the car in the road vehicle register (available at the registration office)
Purchase agreement (doklad o koupi) – optional but recommended
Certificate of roadworthiness (technický průkaz)
Car registration certificate (registration documents)
Personal identification documents (and power of attorney if applicable)
Vehicle registration check (STK), not older than 30 days
Proof of legal car insurance
Make sure you have all the required documents when you visit the Regional Vehicle Registry Office to complete the transfer process.
Ensure the car ownership transfer process is completed within 10 days of purchasing the car. Any delay may result in a fine for the seller. The seller is responsible for ensuring the buyer is present at the office and that all documents and keys are handed over only after the transfer is officially completed.
How Much Does Changing Car Ownership Cost?
The car ownership transfer process in the Czech Republic costs 800 CZK. If a vehicle registration check (STK) is required, expect to pay an additional 800 CZK to the inspection office.
Additionally, if the car doesn’t meet current emission regulations, an ecological tax may also apply.
