Changes in the law from 2021

Health Insurance

The Czech House of Commons agreed with the amendment, which will oblige foreigners who will stay in the territory of the Czech Republic for more than 90 days to purchase health insurance.
Health insurance will be accepted only if purchased from the VZP company, as the amendment also states.
This obligation will not affect foreigners who have Czech public health insurance or are holders of EHIC or GHIC cards.
The last important change in the Law is connected to Czech public Health Insurance. If a mother with the Czech long-term residency will give birth to her baby in the territory of the Czech Republic, the baby will be in the system of the Czech public health insurance for the whole month in the month when he/she becomes 60 days old.

The Czech Temporary Residency of EU citizen

This type of Czech residency will only change its name to – Confirmation of registration (Osvědčení o registraci).
Value, requirements and period will be kept the same.

A family member of EU citizen

The Law paragraph, which defines the family member of EU citizen will be changed to the following:

Change of the personal document types

From the 2nd of August 2021 – all third nationals including the family members of the EU will receive biometric cards.
Third nationals, who are the family members of the EU citizens, will be obligated to exchange their current personal documents for the biometric cards. Validity of current personal documents of third nationals above-mentioned will end on the 3rd of August 2023.
For third nationals who are not in a direct family relationship with EU or Czech citizens is highly recommended to exchange their current documents before the 31st of August 2022, so they can keep their status.

New requirements for the applications

The requirements will change only for third nationals who are willing to apply for a temporary residency permit based on a permanent relationship with EU or Czech citizen who has permanent residency in the Czech Republic.
New requirements will be following:
  • comprehensive health insurance covering the whole period of the applicant’s stay
  • document proving the monthly funds after reunification

British citizens – BREXIT in the Czech Republic

The British citizens who are currently holders of the Czech temporary residency certificates with EU withdrawal agreement stamp or the Czech Permanent residency book are obliged to switch their current personal documents to biometric cards. The same obligation applies to their family members who got the Czech residency based on a relationship with them.
British citizens who may prove their stay in the Czech Republic before the 31st of December 2020 can still apply for Czech Temporary residency (Confirmation of registration), but they will not receive the residency document as certificates, but as biometric cards. The deadline of exchanging the residency certificate for the biometric card is 02.08.2022.
